The 2x2x2 cube pieces and notation

The pieces

2x2x2 cube with all the pieces black

To be able to solve the cube, we must know it a bit, and to start, we will get to know the pieces of the cube. The 2x2x2 cube has 8 pieces, and all are of the same type:

Corners

2x2x2 cube with all the pieces black, except one green cantonade

These 8 pieces that make up the cube are corners, which means that each piece has 3 different colors. All pieces have the same shape, and all have 3 colors.

2x2x2 cube notation

To be able to read and write series of moves, the notation that I will explain next is used.

The cube has 6 faces, and each face is assigned a different letter, which will mean turning the face 1/4 turn clockwise. The counterclockwise rotation is determined by placing a ' after the letter. If we need to turn a face 1/2 turn, we put a 2 after the letter.

  • F: Front - Front
  • U: Up - Up
  • D: Down - Down
  • R: Right - Right
  • L: Left - Left
  • B: Back - Back
Explanation of the notation in the clockwise sense
Clockwise
Explanation of the notation in the counterclockwise sense
Counterclockwise

The possible moves are as follows.

Clockwise:

Left
L
Front
F
Right
R
Back
B
Up
U
Down
D

Counterclockwise:

Left Prime
L'
Front Prime
F'
Right Prime
R'
Back Prime
B'
Up Prime
U'
Down Prime
D'

Double layer moves can be indicated by using the number 2 after the letter. The direction of the turn is not relevant, as whether you do it clockwise or counterclockwise, the result will be the same. Here are some examples:

Down Double
D2
Up Double
U2
Left Double
L2
